There was a first start for Tony Springett as Jon Brady made three changes for the trip to Wycombe Wanderers. Manny Monthe and Mitch Pinnock also came into the side with Patrick Brough and Sam Hoskins missing out through injury and illness respectively.
After a quiet opening quarter of an hour, Springett cut in from the right but after beating two defenders his shot was saved by Franco Ravizzoli. Louie Moulden made a good save to keep out a long range shot from Freddie Potts while Kieron Bowie headed over at the culmination of a flowing Cobblers move.
Ryan Tafazolli made an important block to deny Springett as the Cobblers started to up the tempo in the second half.
In a tight game, Wycombe made the breakthrough on 69 minutes, Matt Butcher finding the bottom corner following a quickly taken throw-in.
Ravizzoli made a good save to deny Bowie one-on-one as the Cobblers looked for a quick leveller but as the game became a bit more stretched, Moulden saved from Kieran Sadlier with Guthrie making a good block on the follow-up.
Butcher bagged a second goal with a cross/shot that flicked in off the post on 84 minutes and there was no way back for the Cobblers after that.
