On another very windy April afternoon, boss Jon Brady named an unchanged starting XI for the trip to Fleetwood. Will Hondermarck was back on the bench while Jack Sowerby was left out of the squad as a precaution.

Promise Omochere put Fleetwood in front early on, turning in a low cross from Bosun Lawal. The home side had started brightly and they were denied a second goal by the crossbar after Lee Burge had made a good save to keep out a header from Omochere.

Bosun Lawal doubled Fleetwood’s lead on the half-hour mark, the on-loan Celtic midfielder poking the ball home after being played in by Omochere who could have then made it 3-0 but for another good save from Burge.

Shaun Rooney blocked a shot from Ben Fox as the Cobblers tried to pull a goal back before half-time but it had been Fleetwood’s half and they were 2-0 up at the break.

Jordan Willis, Ali Koiki and Shaun McWilliams came on in a triple change at half-time, replacing Akin Odimayo, Mitch Pinnock and Sam Hoskins.

Omochere spurned a good chance at the start of the second half while Kieron Bowie failed to find the target from an acute angle. Bowie then saw a shot deflected behind as Jon Brady’s side tried to up the tempo.

Marc Leonard curled a free kick over the bar with five minutes to play and Bowie had a goal disallowed for off-side in stoppage time on a frustrating afternoon for the Cobblers.
