IAN SAMPSON PRAISES PLAYERS BUT WARY OF FLEETWOOD THREAT ON SATURDAY

Northampton Town interim assistant manager Ian Sampson has praised the players after the Cobblers secured their League One status for another season.

Only once in 26 years have Northampton Town earned more than the 59 points they currently have at this level and Sampson says the players deserve a lot of credit.

"We set a target and we are delighted to have reached that target so soon," he said. "The group has done really well, and I think we have surprised a few people along the way. It is a really good achievement but we are not finished yet and we want to put some more points on the board.

"Playing against teams fighting for their lives is never easy but that’s a tribute to the lads that we won both games against Port Vale and Carlisle without conceding. It will be another tough test at Fleetwood on Saturday but we will go there with confidence.

"Our form against teams in the bottom five at home was really strong and that was the aim. We looked at the teams we thought we might be competing with and it is important you target those games to pick up some strong results and we have done that.

"Fleetwood have some very good players and they are dangerous opponents. They will be fighting hard and we will need to go there and be professional, strong and solid and keep our standards high. They haven't had the season they would have wanted but they have some top League One players in their side and we will need to be on top of our game to get a result."
