Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard was disappointed as his side lost 2-1 at home to Milton Keynes Dons in the EFL Youth Alliance Merit League Two on Saturday.
Neo Dobson scored the young Cobblers’ goal as they ended the season with a defeat.
Goddard said: “It’s a disappointing end to the season because we weren’t at our best.”
“We never really got going and struggled to get to grips with their shape.
“We took the lead against the run of play thanks to a great finish from Neo, but they continued to create chances and turned it around with two quick goals late on.
“We had been on a good run, and we wanted to finish on a high, but inconsistency is the story of our season.
“We’ll be looking to improve that next year.
“The positive is that we’ve been able to include all of the Under 16s in the second half of the season, which means they’ll be used to the environment and expected standards right from the off when we return.”
