Northampton Town signed former Preston North End left back David Buchanan in the summer of 2015. The Rochdale-born defender started his career at Bury, making his debut for the Shakers in a 2-2 draw against Kidderminster in April 2005. Buchanan would make a further two appearances for the club that season. He made the breakthrough at Gigg Lane over the following two seasons, finishing the 2005/06 season with 26 appearances for the club, before establishing himself as a regular for Bury, playing 48 times during 2006/07. The former Northern Ireland U19 international made almost 200 appearances for the Shakers during his five years at the club before moving north of the border to join Hamilton. Buchanan made 30 appearances during his time in Scotland, and scored his first ever senior goal, netting in a 3-1 defeat against St Mirren in April 2011. He returned to England and the north west, signing for Tranmere Rovers after impressing during an initial two week trial spell at the club. Buchanan was virtually an ever present as he made 44 appearances for the Birkenhead outfit in 2011/12, and even scored the winner on his Rovers debut against Leyton Orient, his first goal in English football. He won the 2011/12 player of the year award in his sole season at Prenton Park, and his form for Tranmere did not go unnoticed, with Preston eager to make the left back part of the squad at Deepdale. He joined the Lilywhites on July 1, 2012, signing a two-year deal before going to make 38 appearances in his debut season with the club. Overall the defender made 26 appearances for the club during the 2013/14 season and signed a contract extension that kept him at Deepdale until the summer of 2015. Was ever present at Sixfields in 2015/16 as Northampton Town won the League 2 title. Went on to make more than 100 consecutive appearances for the club, a run only ended by a harsh red card, the first of his career. Was voted Players Player of the Season in 2016/17.
