Northampton Town travelled to meet Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium. Billy Waters replaced Matt Crooks (knee) in the only change to the side with a place on the bench for 17-year old midfielder Scott Pollock, a graduate from the club’s Football & Education programme. Shaun McWilliams (ankle) was unavailable for selection.

Mansfield broke from a Cobblers corner on 5 minutes to take the lead, Timi Elsnik making a run before beating David Cornell with a good finish.

Sam Foley couldn’t quite convert a Sam Hoskins cross midway through the first half as the Cobblers came close to an equaliser. Kevin van Veen then found himself in space in front of goal but his side-footed effort was claimed by Bobby Olejnik.

Van Veen tested Olejnik in first half stoppage time but the Stags goalkeeper did well to keep out the Dutchman’s effort with his legs. Cornell then made a couple of good saves to keep the score at 1-0, first from goalscorer Elsnik and the second Matt Preston’s header from point blank range.

Dean Austin made a change at half-time, bringing on Andy Williams for van Veen. Cornell saved an Otis Khan free-kick and the Cobblers keeper made another smart save at the feet of Tyler Walker to prevent the home side doubling their lead.

Danny Rose did extend the home side’s advantage on 57 minutes, the Stags striker keeping his cool to slot the ball home.

Williams saw a shot deflected behind as the Cobblers looked to get themselves back into the game while Cornell made another good save to deny Neal Bishop from a corner.

CJ Hamilton scored from an acute angle to make it 3-0 and Rose made it four after getting on the end of a cross in from the right.
