CLUB INVESTING IN BIG SUMMER OF PITCH WORK AT BOTH SIXFIELDS AND MOULTON

Head Groundsman Paul Knowles on the work taking place

27 May 2024

Head Groundsman Paul Knowles has been talking about the pitch renovations taking place at both Sixfields and Moulton this summer.

Both the main pitch at Sixfields and the four training pitches at the club's Moulton training ground are undergoing renovation work, and Knowles said the work being undertaken represents a major investment by the club.

"The club are spending a lot of money on the pitches, both at Sixfields and at Moulton, to get them in the best possible condition for next season," he said.

"The main pitch at Sixfields has come to the end of its three year life cycle, so this summer is time for a major renovation and it will effectively be a new pitch next season.

"We are stripping the top inch off the pitch to remove the weaker grass, then adding 100 tons of sand, spiking and brushing the pitch, re-establishing the levels and then re-seeding and feeding the new grass.

"We will be cutting the new grass around two to two and a half weeks after planting and then it is a case of feeding and mowing the new pitch. Our target with the pitch is to be ready for mid-July, it is always a tight turnaround but we will be ready with the new pitch for then.

"Each season that goes by, the amount of weaker grass gets bigger, and so after about three years you need to do a major renovation to remove all of that weaker grass and replace with new, fresh, stronger grass to maintain the quality of playing surface.

"All four of the pitches at Moulton are having their renovation too. They have all been scarified and re-seeded while pitch three up there in particular has had a big renovation and is looking really good already and will be ready for the players for the start of July.

"The club have invested a lot in the pitches this summer both at Sixfields and at Moulton and we are looking forward to delivering the best possible surfaces for both the first team and the academy to play and train on next season."
