YOUTH TEAM DRAW AT LEYTON ORIENT

A report on today's EFL Youth Alliance action

30 January 2024

Northampton Town Under 18s drew 1-1 away to Leyton Orient in the EFL Youth Alliance South East on Tuesday afternoon.

Charlie Carroll scored the young Cobblers’ goal as they earned a point in the rearranged fixture.

Coach Shane Goddard made one change to the side that lost at home to Sutton United at the weekend, as Reuben Wyatt replaced Kiantay Licorish-Mullings in the starting lineup.

Both sides cancelled eachother out until midway through the first half when Neo Dobson cut inside, dribbled past two Leyton Orient defenders and had a shot held by Lenny Holden.

The hosts created numerous opportunities in the remainder of the opening period, Thomas Avgoustidis side-footing wide and curling over the crossbar and Reon Smith-Kouassi having two close-range efforts saved by Marcus Bald at the near post.

Leyton Orient made the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time as Makai Welch’s shot was parried away by Bald and Emmanuel Kwatchey converted the rebound.

The Cobblers dominated the second half and equalised on the hour mark when Wyatt played a perfectly-timed pass to the unmarked Carroll, who fired into the bottom corner.

The visitors had two great chances to score a late winner, with Joziah Barnett’s poke towards goal being denied by Holden and Tom Cartwright hooking inches wide from Archie Murray’s deep corner.

The youth team travel to Cambridge United for their penultimate match of the regular season on Saturday.

Cobblers: Marcus Bald, Josh Rayfield, Jozef Baxter, Tom Cartwright, Matthew Ireland, Jacob Scott, James Owen, Reuben Wyatt, Jamari Hart, Neo Dobson, Charlie Carroll

Substitutes: Elliot Smith, Freddie Findlay, Harry Guess, Archie Murray, Joziah Barnett
