Man v Fat Northampton is a long standing and successful football based weight management programme that has been running since August 2018.
It all started off as an idea of how overweight like minded males can use a football setting to lose weight and to get back to living a healthy lifestyle. Since its formation in 2016 by founder Andrew Shanahan, the organisation has grown to operating over 100 leagues around the UK.
The Northampton League has engaged over 300 men aged 18+ plus with a BMI over 27.5 and has seen, since its formation, a loss of over 800kg with participants achieving a healthy BMI and going on to set their own fitness goals to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Currently Man v Fat Northampton are a four team league which operates on Tuesday nights at Goals Soccer Centre on Mereway from 7-8pm where players weigh in and play a 30 minute game.
To showcase the success of the programme we share the stories of the participants who have benefited from Man v Fat.
Matt Bates, Man v Fat participant said:
“When I was at my biggest, it felt at times like there was nothing I could do that would help me lose weight. But Man v Fat and the people in the club have played a massive part in helping me keep consistent with my weight loss throughout the past couple of years. Since joining the group I have lost 40kg and completely transformed my life.”
Former participant Ross Dyke, achieved a healthy BMI and has now moved on to play regular 5 aside football with other former Man v Fat participants also shares his journey;
“In March 2020 I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes at the age of 41. I weighed over 21 stone and that diagnosis was the kick up the bum I needed to sort my life out. Two of my good friends and colleagues were already members of Man v Fat Northampton and encouraged me to sign up. That changed my life! These new friends motivated me to become the best version of me. By February 2021 (within a year of diagnosis) I had lost over 7 stone and had officially reversed diabetes! I had been ‘overweight’ for 15 years and now I suddenly had a whole new life to enjoy.”
Man v Fat is a programme where participants can look to take part in a weight loss programme linked with a sport they all used to play in their youth. It is an initiative different to a gym based environment where you can enjoy losing weight in a team based environment. Man v Fat really emphasises the importance of creating a positive culture and education to help overweight men work towards a healthy lifestyle through the power of football.
2021 saw the launch of the Kettering League which in its inaugural season saw over 300kg of weight loss. This league operates on Wednesdays from 7-8 pm at Kettering Science Academy, another successful league which has seen more participants reach a healthy BMI and will soon expand into a 6 team league.
Both leagues have places available so if you are male aged 18+ with a BMI over 27.5 then this could be the programme for you.
