DEFEAT FOR THE FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME ELITE SQUAD

Report on Wednesday's match with Norwich City

7 February 2024

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme Elite squad lost 3-1 at home to Norwich City in the National Football Youth League South Premier Division on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cobblers created the first chance of the game inside two minutes as Rojus Kuzminskas ran onto captain Louey Franks’ throw-in and lofted the ball over the bar.

Kyran Yeomans reacted quickly to tip over a close-range effort at the other end less than a minute later.

The ‘keeper pushed away a flick from a cutback, but an attacker followed-in to turn home the rebound and open the scoring for Norwich midway through the first period.

Daniel Collin-Kolawole cut inside and had a low drive tipped past the post as the hosts came close to drawing level on the stroke of half-time.

The visitors doubled their lead shortly after the restart when Franks headed a looping effort off the line and an attacker fired the follow-up into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

The advantage was extended on the hour mark as an attacker sprinted down the right wing and finished low across goal.

Kuzminskas won the ball in the area and sent a shot narrowly wide of the far post moments before running onto a bouncing ball and forcing the onrushing ’keeper into a save as the Cobblers searched for a route back into the contest in the final half-an-hour.

The hosts pulled a goal back with five minutes to go when Mmenim Ekop’s ball across the face of goal diverted in off a defender, but there was too little time remaining for them to complete the comeback.
