FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME WOMEN'S SQUAD BEAT EVERTON IN CUP SEMI FINAL

A report on Wednesday's game

7 February 2024

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme Women’s squad won 2-0 at home to Everton in the National Football Youth League Women’s Cup semi-finals on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cobblers took the lead after a competitive opening quarter-of-an-hour, Alex Dicks lobbing the onrushing ‘keeper having sprinted onto Keeley Jackson’s ball over the top of the defence.

The hosts almost doubled their advantage midway through the first half as Dicks’ cross was played back into the middle by Laila Channell and Jackson’s stab was stopped by the ’keeper.

Everton grew into the contest and came close to equalising shortly before the break when an attacker found some space and sent a low shot narrowly wide from long range.

There was still time for the Cobblers to create another opportunity in the first half, the ‘keeper rushing off her line to block Dicks’ poke after the forward ran through on goal.

The second period was a tense affair with the visitors pushing forward in search of a leveller.

Iona Smith was forced into action by two long-range free-kicks going into the final 10 minutes, tipping the first over and pushing the second onto the crossbar.

Mia Richards secured the hosts’ place in the final with two minutes of normal time remaining. Jackson played the ball to Georgia Gale, and she laid it off to Richards who curled home from long range.

Cobblers: Iona Smith, Laila Channell, Afrika de Villiers, Maddie Carter, Georgia Gale, Mia Richards, Ruby Heselden, Cassidy Flynn, Keeley Jackson, Alex Dicks, Kitty Crouch

Substitutes: Ellie Barker, Phoebe Preston, Lauren Hewitt, Mia Paradise
