Jack Sowerby was back on the bench for the trip to Burton Albion as boss Jon Brady named the same starting XI for a third consecutive fixture. Tony Springett (illness) was unavailable for selection.

Burton started brightly with Mason Bennett heading over an early chance and Deji Oshilaja shooting wide from 10-yards. Having grown into the contest it was the Cobblers though who took the lead midway through the first half when the in-form Marc Leonard beat Max Crocombe with a deflected 25-yard strike.

Louie Moulden made a good save to deny Ryan Sweeney as the home side looked for a quick response while at the other end Crocombe saved a low shot from Kieron Bowie as the Cobblers looked to double their lead which they duly did on 36 minutes, Mitch Pinnock picking up a loose ball before finding the bottom corner with a sweet strike from 20-yards.

Trailing 2-0, the home side made four changes ten minutes into the second half with Kyle Hudlin, Steve Seddon, Joe Hugill and Mustapha Carayol all coming on.

Shaun McWilliams, on in a double change with Louis Appere, almost scored with his first touch but his rasping strike from distance rattled the post. The Cobblers were looking to kill the game off with a third goal and Bowie slid a shot just wide following a counter-attack.

Moulden tipped over a header from Hudlin and Carayol fired a shot just wide as the Brewers tried to set up a grandstand finale but Jon Brady’s side stood firm to close out the victory.
