SHANE GODDARD DELIGHTED AS YOUTH TEAM HIT SEVEN

Reaction to Saturday's Merit Division action

8 April 2024

Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard was delighted with his side’s 7-0 win at home to Newport County in the EFL Youth Alliance Merit League Two on Saturday.

Neo Dobson scored a brace whilst Francesco Obiagwu, Josh Rayfield, Kiantay Licorish-Mullings, Jason Okunnu and Joziah Barnett netted the young Cobblers’ other goals as they earned their second victory of the second stage of the season.

Goddard said: “It’s exactly the reaction we wanted after last week’s defeat away to Forest Green Rovers.

“Credit to the boys for adapting to the conditions, because it was very windy today.

“We made effective decisions in both halves, whether we needed to play or go longer.

“When we did go longer, it was well thought-out with good movement in behind.

“It was a really pleasing performance, and we thoroughly deserved three points.

“Keeping a clean sheet and scoring seven goals are huge positives.

“Some of the boys scored their first goals for the youth team, and that’s a huge milestone for them.

“It’s also nice to see Dobby back on the scoresheet, because he’s been working very hard recently.”

The youth team travel to Gillingham in a rearranged fixture on Tuesday.
