VICTORY FOR WOMEN'S DEVELOPMENT SIDE

A report on Sunday's action

3 September 2023

Northampton Town Women Development began the defence of their East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Division One South title with a 3-0 win at home to Cardea on Sunday afternoon.

Alex Bartlett, Charlotte Murphy and Emily Maddocks scored the Cobblers’ goals as they defeated their opponents, who were promoted from the Cambridgeshire Girls and Women's Football League Division One as champions last season.

Neither side were able to get into their rhythm in a slow start to the contest, but the Cobblers opened the scoring midway through the first half when Bartlett found the top corner from long range.

The hosts began to control possession and doubled their lead going into the break as Ellie Barker beat two defenders and set-up Murphy who finished calmly.

The Cobblers dominated the second half with opportunities falling to both Illana Stelfox and Eva Ladyman, but they were only able to break down their opponents once more before the final whistle.

Barker linked-up with Georgia Tear, and she cut the ball back to Maddocks who fired in her first goal for the club to secure all three points on the opening day.

Alex de Boer and James Geddes’ side host Thrapston Town in their next league fixture on Sunday 8th October. Kick-off at Harpole FC is at 2pm.

Cobblers: Thompson, Carter, Rylance, Koolen, Speed, Bartlett, Gale (POTM), Tear, Barker, Flynn, Murphy
Substitutes: Cox, Maddocks, De Villiers, Stelfox, Ladyman
