CHAIRMAN REFLECTS ON SUMMER TRANSFER WINDOW

Kelvin Thomas on recruiting, retaining and re-signing players

8 September 2023

Chairman Kelvin Thomas has been looking back at the summer transfer window and says the club have done some good business.

Six new players arrived or re-signed, while the likes of Sam Hoskins, Ali Koiki and Max Dyche signed new contracts while the club rejected offers from other clubs for players under contract.

"I think it was a decent summer window and we improved the squad," he said.

"We increased the budget a couple of times over the window to bring a couple of players in but its like anything else, you always want a bit more or one more player. We have to be realistic of course but overall but I think we have a strong group here now.

"Signing players is exciting and everyone likes a last day of the window signing but we can't overlook the strong group we have, a lot of whom have been very successful for us over the last two years. We believe in them and that's why we have signed a lot of them on longer contracts and have a lot of continuity.

"When you turn down good money for your players that shows a level of commitment, both from a club and a player point of view. Getting Sam Hoskins on a new contract given the demand there was for him is something we are very pleased about. It is a tribute to the club, the culture we have here and to Sam himself. He has been and is a terrific servant to the club. He has gone through his challenges but he has grown and developed and he deserves all the success and the credit he is enjoying.

"Players want to be here. Marc Leonard and Kieron Bowie could have gone to other clubs but they have come back because they enjoy it here and they feel at home here. Loan players are not a cheap option, you might get them a little cheaper on a first loan but once they do well and go out again those first time loan prices are not repeated! But they fit within the budget and we are delighted they are here.

"We work with what we have and we work hard to do the best for the club.

"It is always a fine line between having the best squad we possibly can and not over extending the club. That is our job as custodians on behalf of the community and current and future generations of supporters. Managers always want one more player as they should do. It happens all the time but that's their job to help them win matches. I would expect a manager to push and push for more players. We set a budget and then that is handed to the manager to spend as they wish and as they see fit. I think Jon and Colin and the rest of the recruitment team have proved themselves over and over again in terms of our recruitment and as a club I think we are in a decent place."
