FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME WOMEN'S SQUAD CLAIM DRAW

A report on Wednesday's action

27 September 2023

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme Women’s squad drew 1-1 at home to Bromley in the National Football Youth League South Premier Women on Wednesday afternoon.

Alex Dicks scored the Cobblers’ goal as they continued their unbeaten start to the season.

The hosts created the first opportunity on the quarter-of-an-hour mark when a corner fell to captain Ruby Heselden at the far post, she was unable to get a shot away and Kitty Crouch’s follow-up from the penalty spot was blocked.

They threatened again midway through the opening period as TJ Warren’s low, first-time strike from the edge of the area was pushed away by the ‘keeper and Mia Richards’ close-range follow-up was cut-out by a covering defender. The forward’s inswinging delivery from the resulting corner almost curled in at the back post.

Dicks sprinted onto Laila Channell’s through ball and had a long-range effort held by the ‘keeper and Richards nearly reached the striker’s whipped ball across goal as the Cobblers continued to push for a first-half opener.

Richards was involved again early in the second half when her central, long-range free-kick was tipped over by the back-pedalling ‘keeper.

The hosts opened the scoring soon after, Dicks stepping up to roll a penalty into the bottom corner following a handball on the line.

However, Bromley equalised against the run of play going into the final 15 minutes when a halfway line set-piece dipped over Iona Smith and bounced into the roof of the net.

Smith denied the visitors’ first clear-cut chance a few minutes later, rushing off her line to block one-on-one after an attacker was played in on goal.

Neither side were able to find a late winner in the time that remained as the points were shared.
