Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard praised his side’s mentality after their 2-0 win away to Mickleover in the FA Youth Cup first round proper on Thursday.
Harry Guess and James Owen scored the young Cobblers’ goals as they progressed to the second round.
“Credit to Mickleover for reaching this stage of the competition because they had to win a number of games to get to the first round proper,” Goddard said.
“That meant that we had to be in a professional mindset to get the result.
“The boys conducted themselves well and stuck to the game-plan.
“Having a two-goal lead at half-time allowed us to restrict any opportunities and see the game out in the second half.
“We were good for the win and we’re really happy to be in the next round.
“We have some good memories from this competition, so we’re looking forward to what the draw brings.”
The youth team return to league action a week on Saturday when they travel to Gillingham.
