Skipper Jon Guthrie returned from injury and there was a full first team debut for Reuben Wyatt as Northampton Town travelled to MK Dons for their final group fixture in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

Ryan Haynes drew a comfortable early save from Michael Kelly and Dean Lewington made a close range block to deny Will Hondermarck in a largely uneventful opening half hour. Jon Brady was however booked for his protestations against a decision made by referee Sam Purkiss.

Having come through more than a third of the game unscathed, Jon Guthrie and Louis Appere made way for Max Dyche, also back from injury, and academy striker Neo Dobson in a planned double change.

Manny Monthe headed the Cobblers in front on 36 minutes with the central defender on the end of a pin-point corner from Wyatt. Tyreece Simpson went close to doubling Town’s lead in first half stoppage time but was denied by a good save from Kelly.

Haynes flashed a shot just wide as the Cobblers looked to double their lead in the second half but MK Dons were back on level terms from a corner on 56 minutes when Charlie Waller scored via a deflection.

Darragh Burns then fired the home side in front with a riffled drive into the top corner.

Ali Koiki was replaced by Jacob Scott after picking up a knock before Max Thompson made a good save to deny Brooklyn Ilunga.

Tyreece Simpson scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-2 after Dons substitute Josh Clark-Anderson fouled Wyatt but the home side were soon back in front when Dawson Devoy found the top corner with a fine strike from 25-yards.

Tom Cartwright came on for his Cobblers debut in stoppage time, replacing Wyatt who had picked up an off-the-ball injury but Devoy’s strike proved decisive as the Dons claimed a 3-2 victory.
