SHANE GODDARD EXCITED FOR FUTURE AS YOUTH TEAM SEASON COMES TO AN END

Reaction to Saturday's EFL Youth Alliance Merit Division action

Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard says he is excited for the future after his side ended the EFL Youth Alliance Merit League Two undefeated.

The young Cobblers, who were crowned champions in the penultimate fixture of their season, drew 0-0 at home to Milton Keynes Dons in the final fixture of their 2022-23 campaign.

“It’s a really positive way for us to finish,” Goddard said.

“Two teams playing different styles created a competitive game.

“Both teams had chances and both ‘keepers had to make important saves.

“We also made some vital last-ditch tackles and blocks in the last few minutes.

“Their squad was much older than ours and the boys can be proud that they went toe-to-toe with some experienced players.

“They would have learned a lot and that puts us in a really good position looking ahead to next season.

“They’re a brilliant group and their desire and work-rate is excellent, as shown by their defending late in the game today.

“They’re hard to beat, resolute, they show quality and make good decisions at key times.

“They have to maintain that, and I’m sure they’ll look to rise to any challenges they face next season.

“I’m looking for more of the same and for them to continue to enjoy playing for the club.

“We’ll get the Under 16s into the building full-time, and we’re excited about what the group could potentially become.”

The youth team end the second stage of the season with a points tally of 21, having scored 24 goals in nine games.
