SAM HOSKINS BECOMES FIRST PLAYER TO SCORE 20 LEAGUE GOALS IN A SEASON SINCE RICHARD HILL IN 1986/87

Hoskins also moving up club appearance chart

Sam Hoskins has become the first Northampton Town player to score 20 league goals in a season since Richard Hill in 1987.

Hoskins became the first Cobblers player to reach the magical 20 mark when he scored against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, his goals coming from just 33 appearances.

A few players have been close to reaching the figure since Hill's goals helped Graham Carr's side to the 1986/87 Division 4 title.

Tony Adcock scored 20 goals in 1988/89 but only seventeen of those were in the league, with Bobby Barnes scoring 20 in 1989/90 but again these goals were split between league and cups.

Carlo Corazzin and Jamie Forrester both got in to the high teens in following seasons, with  Adebayo Akinfenwa and Marc Richards also going close in the years that followed. Scott McGleish also scored 24 in 2005/06, 17 of them coming in the league.

Hoskins is also making his way up the list of all time appearance makers. He is now on 330, placing him joint 7th in the club's all time list behind 552 for Tommy Fowler, 449 for Ian Sampson, 412 for Peter Gleasure, 363 for Edwin Freeman, 352 for Joe Kiernan, 352 for William Watson and level on 330 with Phil Chard.

Hoskins arrived at the club, originally on trial in the summer of 2015, before being signed by then manager Chris Wilder, and he is therefore in a good place to judge the club's progression over the years.

"I never thought I would play this many games for the club or score as many goals as I have and I am very proud," he said.

"I don't think I expected to be here so long but I am very pleased I have been. The club is very well run and I have seen progression in all areas of the club over the years.

"Hopefully I can keep climbing the ladders as I feel very settled and I think I have played my best football over the last two years and that shows how settled I am.

"I am very proud to have achieved what I have and hopefully as a team we can continue to move forward."
