The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme Women’s squad won 3-1 at home to Huddersfield Town in the National Football Youth League Cup semi-finals on Wednesday.

Alex Dicks scored all of the Cobblers’ goals as they progressed to a final for the second consecutive season.

After a fast-paced start, there was little goal-mouth action in the first half.

The hosts took an early lead when Keira Doig hooked the ball to Dicks, who worked some space and sent a deflected shot into the bottom corner.

Their NFYL North Premier Women opponents came inches from equalising on the quarter-of-an-hour mark as Iona Smith tipped Lily West’s powerful strike onto the crossbar.

It took until the opening minute of the second half for the next clear-cut chance to arrive, Dicks doubling her tally and the Cobblers’ advantage with a swept effort across the ‘keeper.

Keeley Jackson almost scored a third for her side when she fired just over from long range on the hour mark.

Northampton continued to create opportunities in the second period, Dicks’ audacious effort from the touchline hitting the bar and Doig having her curled follow-up headed off the line.

Despite the hosts’ control after the break, their opponents halved the deficit with nine minutes of normal time remaining when a corner was cleared to West who drove home from the edge of the area.

Huddersfield were pushing for a late equaliser, but Dicks rounded the ’keeper and finished in added time to complete her hat-trick and secure her side’s place in the final.

Elsewhere on Wednesday afternoon, the Elite squad travelled to Crystal Palace in the NFYL South Premier Division.
