FEMALE FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME SQUAD ARE VLUK CUP CHAMPIONS!

A report on Wednesday's action

14 June 2023

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme Women’s squad are the VLUK Cup champions!

Alex Dicks and Keira Doig scored braces whilst Madie Winyard and Beth Artemiou netted the Cobblers’ other goals as they won 6-0 at home to Oxford City in the final on Wednesday afternoon.

Both sides came close to an early opener, Ruby Heselden having a header clawed away by the ‘keeper as it flew towards the top corner and Iona Smith back-pedalling to tip a dipping free-kick over at the other end.

The hosts took the lead on the quarter-of-an-hour mark when Dicks smashed a wide free-kick straight over the ‘keeper and into the far corner.

Winyard nodded Remi Martin’s deep free-kick into the bottom corner to double the advantage on the half-hour.

Doig extended the Northampton lead two minutes before the break, slotting home from close range to finish off a slick passing move which also involved Mia Richards and Jess Short.

Three goals in five minutes before the hour killed-off any hopes of an Oxford City comeback.

Dicks found the top corner having narrowly stayed onside, Doig finished low across goal after playing a one-two with the striker and captain Artemiou drove home on the turn.

The inaugural VLUK Cup was held during the 2020-21 season, and this year’s success continues the Cobblers’ 100% record in the tournament.
