MANAGEMENT DUO PLEASED AS NORTHAMPTON TOWN WOMEN CONTINUE PRE-SEASON PROGRESS

Reaction to Sunday's game

31 July 2023

Northampton Town Women joint-managers Josh Oldfield and Liam Williams were delighted with their side’s 4-0 win over Ashford Town (Middlesex) in a friendly on Sunday.

Jade Bell scored a hat-trick and Chloe Martin netted the Cobblers’ other goal as they made it four wins from four games in pre-season.

“We were on top for large parts, we scored two goals in the first half-an-hour and we could have scored more,” Oldfield said.

“Credit to Ashford, they came back into the game and had the better of the last part of the half, but we went into half-time comfortable and confident in what we were doing and pleased with the majority of the work we did.

“Ashford pressed us at the start of the second half and it took a while for us to solve the problem, but once we did we were well on top again.

“We scored the third and fourth and again, could have taken even more opportunities.

“Overall, it’s another challenging pre-season game that we’re pleased to have come away with a convincing win from.

“It’s important to continue the momentum, and that’s what we’ve been doing each week.

“Our friendly schedule has been designed to replicate the challenges we’ll face this season.

“We got the rewards we deserved today, and we move on to the next one.”

A number of first team players were missing from the squad, meaning Oldfield and Williams were forced into naming a rotated side.

The latter was pleased with how the players that came into the team performed.

“Today was an opportunity for new signings, younger players and Development squad players to secure a place in the squad,” he added.

“It was also an opportunity for our senior players to lift the team and show them what it means to be a first team player.

“We’re really pleased with the way all the players took their opportunities, and they’ve done us very proud.

“They’ve also given us a massive headache moving forwards because we’ve got lots of players throughout the system that are pushing to be at the top of the tree in the first team.

“Credit to joint-managers Alex de Boer and James Geddes because some of the Development squad players have seamlessly slotted into the first team today.”
