Northampton Town Women joint-managers Josh Oldfield and Liam Williams were pleased as their side began their 2023-24 pre-season schedule with a 1-0 win away to London Seaward on Sunday afternoon.
Jade Bell scored the Cobblers’ goal as they defeated their opponents, who finished fifth in the FA Women’s National League Division One South East in the 2022-23 season.
“We want to win every game we play, and pre-season friendlies are no different,” Oldfield said.
“It was a pleasing performance that we’re satisfied with.
“London Seaward are a really good footballing side, but we deserved our goal and carved out good chances, even with less possession in the second half.
“The girls worked hard with aggression and intensity, which is never easy coming off the back of a break and only two weeks’ training.
“For the first game back, I’m really pleased with the performance, and even more so with the result.”
Oldfield and Williams’ side host Cambridge United in their second pre-season fixture next week.
The Cobblers’ fixture at home to the side who finished eighth in the FAWNL Division One South East last season will be played at Sixfields Stadium on Saturday, directly following the men’s first team fixture against Leicester City.
“It’s going to be a big day for the club, and we’ll go into it in really good shape after today,” Williams added.
“It’s been a long break, but this could be us starting to build real momentum.
“We had a really good record at Sixfields last year, so we’re looking to build on that.
“Hopefully we’ll get a really big crowd there, entertain them and get them coming back for more.”
