KELVIN THOMAS ON THE SUMMER RECRUITMENT WORK SO FAR

Chairman on work to add to the squad

28 July 2023

Chairman Kelvin Thomas believes the current Cobblers squad is stronger than the squad that went up to League One last time.

A smaller number of recruits this summer have added to a strong core of players already under contract and while work continues to add to the squad, the Chairman has been talking about the work so far this transfer window.

"I think there’s a lot of factors that have come into this summer and I actually believe we are stronger going up this time than we have been, and I think we are stronger this summer, but it didn’t always feel that way because we’re still integrating a lot of players coming back from injury from last year," he said.

"I think that’s where Jon’s frustration came, he made some comments and there were some fans jumping up and down earlier on in the summer about being stretched during pre-season and he was right to say that because at times we have been, but you can’t really recruit a pre-season team so you can’t really go out and get players just for pre-season in the sense of signing players so we’ve kept the faith in the players we’ve got and resigned the players we wanted and we had to be patient for them to come back

"In terms of the overall landscape we’ve been talking as chairmen ourselves there is without a doubt a significant salary inflation, in League One especially and in League Two the sort of wages that are being spent it is crazy and it does affect targets etc. As a club we are realistic and I think we have shown that and will continue to show it.

"We won’t compete financially with Derby and Reading etc but it’s the same as last year when we couldn’t compete with Stockport but guess what, we competed on the pitch and we finished above them even though they spent significantly more money than us and there will be teams in League One this season that will spend significantly more money, that’s just the reality of life but in truth we know we will compete, we’ve got a spirit here we’ve got a group of players who we believe in.

“We’ve added to that and we still want to add to that and we think we’ve added some quality, and we’ll give it a go and I think that’s all most of our fans ask for and I think Jon, Colin, Marc and the rest of the group have shown that they can get a team playing, they can get results and can dig it out so I do think it will be a challenge but it’s a challenge we’re going to face together and one we are excited by.

"We do have a reasonable knowledge of what the game is about and we’ve had good success as a club so we do understand as the window goes on the demands of agents and players do drop a little bit because the bigger clubs that are willing to pay what we would consider serious money for players can only take a certain amount of players so other players who may have been demanding those sort of wages suddenly get a bit further down the road and realise they may not get that and start looking around at some of their other options.

"We try and avoid those players in general and Jon has a specific type of player and we’ve learnt that we recruit into those sort of styles and Tyreece Simpson is a prime example, I think Jon has been looking at him for a year and a half since he had a good spell at Swindon.

"A player doesn’t become a different player just because you're paying them more money, you’ve got to try and justify value for money as well for us as a football club as a lot of clubs do so I think the inflation is there, but I think we’ve got a good group, we’re not in a place where we have to sell players, we’ve told Jon that so we’re in a good place and we have turned down some significant offers for some of our players this summer."
