It was a wet and windy afternoon at St James Park as the Cobblers continued their pre-season campaign with a trip to Brackley Town.

Summer signing Manny Monthe made his first appearance for the club while Jon Guthrie, Aaron McGowan and Ben Fox were named on the bench with the returning trio looking to play their first minutes in pre-season. Former Cobbler Morgan Roberts started for Brackley.

Kieron Bowie was unable to get a shot away after being played in by Max Dyche, Alex Gudger failed to test Lee Burge from a corner and Danny Newton fired over from inside the box in an opening half hour of few chances.

Sam Hoskins couldn’t quite connect with a whipped in ball in from Patrick Brough after a good initial interception from Peter Abimbola and Hoskins was again denied a shooting opportunity when played in by Shaun McWilliams.

The Cobblers though broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, trialist E finding the bottom corner after a neat one-two with Abimbola.

Brackley got themselves back on level terms seven minutes into the second half, Gareth Dean heading home from a Morgan Roberts free-kick. Not long before that Lee Burge had made a good low save to deny Danny Newton and the Cobblers stopper was called upon again with the score now level, tipping over a rising strike from Tommy O’Sullivan.

It had been a good period of pressure from the home side at the start of the second half but with just over an hour played the Cobblers were back in front, trialist B with a good finish.

Jon Guthrie came on for the final twenty minutes in place of Monthe and it wasn’t long before Aaron McGowan and Ben Fox were also introduced.

McGowan was quickly involved in the action, heading narrowly over from a corner and although Louis Appere saw a last minute penalty saved by Danny Lewis it was a good 2-1 win for Jon Brady’s side with the new season now only two weeks away.
