AARON McGOWAN SIGNS NEW CONTRACT AT SIXFIELDS

Defender is latest player to put pen to paper

21 January 2023

Defender Aaron McGowan has become the latest Northampton Town player to sign a new contract.

The 26 year old vice-captain has put pen to paper on a new two and a half year deal having made 57 appearances so far in eighteen months at Sixfields.

"We are delighted Aaron has signed his new deal," said manager Jon Brady.

"He is a warrior and someone who will run through brick walls for the club. Aaron is a leader in the dressing room and someone who is an ideal role model for the young players to look up to.

"He is a top, top character and a good player too and we are delighted he has become the latest player to commit their future to the club."

McGowan follows Jon Guthrie and Mitch Pinnock in signing new contracts so far this season, and said he was very pleased to remain a Cobbler.

"When you are in a football environment you know and understand that this club is being run in the right way, and is being taken in the right direction," he said.

"That is appealing to any player and that is why players are happy to extend their contracts here.

"We know and can see there is ambition, stability and most importantly a plan at this football club, and that is a key factor in the decision I have made to stay at Northampton Town."

Prior to arriving at Sixfields, McGowan became Morecambe's youngest ever player when he made his debut for the Shrimps in the 2012/13 season, going on to make 119 appearances. In the 2017/18 season he picked up the Player of the Year, Fans Player of the Year, and local media Player of the Year award.

He opted to sign for Hamilton Academical in June 2018 and made 38 appearances, again winning the club's Player of the Year and Fans Player of the Year awards.

He captained the Hamilton side on a number of occasions in 2019/20 as he won the club's Player of the Year award for the second year running.

In the summer of 2020, he moved to Kilmarnock after turning down a new contract at Hamilton before joining Northampton Town.

Thank you to Aaron's sponsor this season, Mayfair Cars.
