SHANE GODDARD PLEASED AS YOUTH TEAM DRAW WITH CAMBRIDGE

Reaction to the weekend's EFL Youth Alliance action

Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard was pleased with his side’s 1-1 draw away to Cambridge United in their penultimate EFL Youth Alliance League South East fixture on Friday.

Tommy Curry scored the young Cobblers’ goal in an even contest that both sides had opportunities to win.

“There are loads of positives to take from the game, and in terms of the result it’s a point gained,” Goddard said.

“We weren’t as fluid as we can be for the first 30 minutes, but we were really strong after that.

“We were well-structured defensively and we caused them some problems.

“They had a couple of chances that hit the woodwork, but we also had some really good entries into the final third and put some quality balls into the box.

“We just lacked a little bit of a cutting edge in terms of decision-making in those goalscoring moments.

“The game could have gone either way, but I’m really pleased with what the group tried to do, particularly in the second half.”

The youth team host Southend United in their final regular season fixture on Tuesday. The two sides played-out a goalless draw in the reverse fixture.

“There will be changes, but we’ll be looking for more of the same,” Goddard added.

“We want to finish the regular season as strongly as possible.

“Looking at the table, we’re as good as anyone defensively, we just haven’t scored as many goals as we need to to turn draws into wins.”
