YOUTH TEAM CLAIM CAMBRIDGE DRAW

EFL Youth Alliance action

17 February 2023

Northampton Town Under 18s drew 1-1 away to Cambridge United in their penultimate EFL Youth Alliance League South East fixture on Friday afternoon.

Tommy Curry scored the young Cobblers’ goal.

The hosts were on top in the opening stages and had two great chances to take the lead early on, Faruq Usman diverting Harry Dawson’s cutback wide from six yards and Randy Bulahio smashing the underside of the crossbar from double the distance.

Northampton began to keep hold of the ball more as Cambridge’s bright start tailed-off, and they thought they had won a penalty when Curry drew Greg Sandiford into a foul in the area, but the referee reversed his initial decision and eventually awarded a corner.

Despite facing the disappointment of not earning a spot-kick, the Cobblers broke the deadlock five minutes before the break when Reuben Wyatt played a lofted pass to Curry, who found the bottom corner at the second time of asking.

The hosts equalised shortly after the restart when substitute Amaru Kaunda half-volleyed into the bottom corner having seen his first effort blocked.

Half-time replacement Neo Dobson almost restored Northampton’s advantage on the hour mark, latching onto Jamari Hart’s quick throw-in, dribbling past two defenders and firing a yard wide from the edge of the box.

Cambridge came close to finding a winner twice in the final five minutes, as Bulahio powered a header inches over the crossbar from George Scales’ deep cross and sub Peter Holmes hit the inside of the post with a first-time strike from 20 yards.

The final opportunity fell to the Cobblers in the fifth minute of added time. Wyatt found Dobson in a central position, but the forward blazed over from the edge of the area.

Dobson’s effort turned out to be the final kick of the game, and the points were shared.

The youth team host Southend United in their final regular season fixture on Tuesday. The two sides played-out a goalless draw in the reverse fixture.
