YOUTH TEAM DRAW WITH SUTTON UNITED

A report on Saturday's EFL Youth Alliance action

4 February 2023

Northampton Town Under 18s drew 1-1 at home to Sutton United in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday morning.

Charlie Carroll scored the young Cobblers’ goal.

The hosts were the more threatening side in the first half, and they created the first chance on the quarter-of-an-hour mark when the ball dropped to Carroll on the edge of the box, his shot was blocked, and Tommy Curry’s follow-up was pounced on by the onrushing Sam Roberts.

Northampton opened the scoring 10 minutes later when Reuben Wyatt’s long-range drive was spilt by the ‘keeper, captain Jacob Scott hit the inside of the post from a tight angle and Carroll was on hand to smash home the close-range rebound.

Curry got on the end of a loose ball and almost knocked it past Roberts to set himself up for a tap-in on the half-hour, but the Sutton stopper recovered to make a block.

Having failed to test Marcus Bald in the Cobblers goal in the opening period, the visitors equalised shortly after the restart when Jake Tones cut inside and curled a low effort into the far corner.

The hosts were struggling to get a hold of the ball in the second half, their next opportunity falling 15 minutes from time when Jamari Hart played a through pass and Curry’s strike from a narrow angle deflected into the side-netting.

Hart almost got himself on the scoresheet soon after, Roberts pushing away his long-range drive.

Sutton had a great chance to win the game with seven minutes to go when Leo Jenkins was adjudged to have fouled Matthew Nwanekezie in the box.

The forward stepped up to take the penalty, but Bald made a diving save and the rebound was denied by the woodwork.

Substitute Daniel Olabiyi came close twice either side of the 90 minute mark, Licorish-Mullings clearing his deflected shot off the line before Bald made a fingertip save from his next effort.

The Cobblers ‘keeper earned a point for his side with a strong stop from Jack Taylor’s powerful header in added time.

The youth team travel to Brentford next week.
