Former Northampton Town striker Steve Massey has made a donation to support the work of Northampton Town Football Club in the local Northamptonshire community.
Massey, who scored 30 goals in 72 appearances for the Cobblers between 1982 and 1983, has purchased two season tickets with the tickets being donated to the Northamptonshire Carers, an organisation who works closely with the Northampton Town Community Trust.
The tickets will be used to different people each game to give different users of the service a chance to attend home games at Sixfields.
"Football has given me so much, and I want to give something back," Steve said.
"I loved my time as a player with Northampton Town and I loved coming back to Sixfields as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations last season.
"Although I don't live locally, I have been back a few times since and I follow the club's fortunes closely. It is clear this is a club with a wonderful community connection and I wanted to help with that.
"Northamptonshire Carers are a wonderful charity and this fits perfectly with my intention of allowing those who may not otherwise be able to attend a home game, the chance to do so.
"These season tickets are also partly in memory of my Dad. He took me to games as a child and I hope that these tickets will allow others to grow their support for the Cobblers and their love of the game in general. During my 18 months at Northampton Town, Dad became a genuine Cobblers fan and felt an emotive bond with the club."
Mark Major, CEO, Northamptonshire Carers added: “Thank you to Steve Massey and Northampton Town for the kind offer of a pair of tickets to home games for carers. Attending a football match will be a much-needed break from caring for fans who have a caring role. Many carers would find committing to every game difficult so we will ensure that as many carers can attend as possible. We wish the Cobblers the very best for the rest of the season and hope that they are promoted back to League One.”
Northamptonshire Carers is a local charity who support the 70,000 unpaid carers in Northamptonshire who in turn care for loved-ones with a disability, long-term health condition or mental illness. Northamptonshire Carers support carers of all ages, including young carers from 5 years old. For further information or support, please see northamptonshire-carers.org
