FEMALE FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME SQUAD BEAT TOTTENHAM

A report on Wednesday's action

1 February 2023

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme Women’s squad won 7-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the National Football Youth League South Premier Women on Wednesday afternoon.

Alex Dicks scored a hat-trick whilst Keira Doig and Mia Richards both scored braces as the Cobblers secured a dominant victory.

The hosts created numerous opportunities throughout the first half and were ahead early on when Dicks intercepted a loose goal-kick and passed to Doig, who cut inside and fired into the bottom corner.

Doig returned the favour soon after, playing in Dicks who calmly beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.

Spurs pulled one back directly from a long-range free-kick less than a minute after the restart, but Northampton soon restored their two-goal advantage when Doig side-footed Dicks’ square ball home.

Richards had two efforts blocked and fired a low shot wide as the Cobblers looked to further increase their lead before the break.

She registered the assist when her side did manage to score a fourth late in the half, sliding a through pass ahead of Dicks for the forward to finish.

The midfielder got on the scoresheet and made it five when she ran through on goal and placed into the far corner early in the second period.

She doubled her tally on the hour mark, cutting inside, taking the ball past the ’keeper and finishing despite a touch from a defender on the line.

Northampton almost added a seventh a few minutes later, but the Spurs ‘keeper saved Dicks’ shot from a tight angle and Doig’s close-range follow-up.

Dicks drove in on goal and found the back of the net to complete her hat-trick late on, and the Cobblers were able to celebrate a comfortable three points despite a Spurs consolation in the final few minutes.

Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, the Elite squad narrowly lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace in the NFYL South Premier Division, whilst the Development team lost away to Queens Park Rangers.
