Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard was pleased with his side’s performance as they earned a 2-2 draw away to Brentford in the EFL Youth Alliance South East on Friday.
Harry Guess and Charlie Carroll scored the Cobblers’ goals on a freezing evening in West London.
“We were excellent tonight and played some really good football,” Goddard said.
“We played through every third to create opportunities numerous times.
“It was a good game, but we edged it in terms of quality of chances and their ‘keeper made two saves at crucial times.
“We feel a bit aggrieved about their second equaliser because it was a harsh free-kick and we cleared the first one, but the referee ordered a retake.
“Credit to the boys because they worked really hard and had energy, enthusiasm, quality on the ball and good decision-making.
“It was a good night, which emphasises that it’s not always about the result for us.
“I’m really pleased with what we produced against a well-organised side.”
Forward Carroll was a half-time substitute and impressed off the bench, netting his team’s second goal.
“We played well and it was a great response to our recent form,” he added.
“It was a bit of a change of style for us which we’ve been working on in the week, and it worked really well.
“I wanted to make an impact off the bench and I’m delighted to have scored a goal.”
The youth team travel to Leyton Orient in their next league fixture on Saturday.
