WORKING WITH COMPETITIVE EDGE TO DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS FOR YOUNG PLAYERS

A look at how we are helping the Academy players

5 December 2023

The Northampton Town Academy have partnered with expert training company Competitive Edge to deliver a Life Skills programme to the youth team that runs alongside their football and education sessions.

The programme covers key topics, such as Working in a High-Performance Team, Leadership, Communication, Personal Responsibility, Resilience, amongst others. Mark Thompson and the Competitive Edge team have been and continue to deliver sessions throughout the season to add even more to the extensive personal development programme that the education department at the football club already offer to the youth team in conjunction with League Football Education.

We believe that learning these skills will enhance the boys’ effectiveness as footballers, as well as gaining understanding of these topics, and will provide them with skills that are transferable for life after or alongside football. We are excited to see the impact of this programme delivered in partnership with Competitive Edge.

Over recent weeks, there have been a range of sessions focusing on high performance teams and the skills required to work effectively within these. They have just moved on to looking at effective communication and how that can help in different situations. The sessions have been a combination of practical tasks to test the boys’ skills at working together effectively and communicating in different ways to get positive results.

The sessions have challenged the thought processes of the boys and given them some key messages that they can take forward in their lives both in and away from football. The sessions are set to continue throughout the rest of the season and have added a different dimension to the extensive life skills and personal development programme that the Academy look to offer the Under 18’s during their time as a scholar.

Academy Manager, Ian Sampson, said: "We are delighted to be working with Competitive Edge to deliver this programme to the youth team. We recognise the significant importance in offering more than just a football programme for the boys. We are fortunate to already have a comprehensive personal development programme that is integrated into what we do through our partnership with the LFE and utilising the skills of our education and player care staff. By adding the expertise of Mark and Competitive Edge, we have further enhanced what we offer the boys so that whatever happens during their journey as a footballer, they are as well prepared as possible for the rest of their life."
