SHANE GODDARD SEES POSITIVES IN OPENING DAY DISPLAY FOR UNDER 18S

Reaction to Saturday's EFL Youth Alliance action

Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard believes that his side will be competitive in the EFL Youth Alliance South East this season.

Goddard was speaking after his side lost 1-0 away to AFC Wimbledon in their opening fixture of the campaign on Saturday morning.

The young Cobblers conceded an added-time winner in wet and windy conditions.

“We didn’t really get going in the first half, and we weren’t as good as we needed to be on the ball,” the coach said.

“There was sustained pressure from them, but we were resolute and defended our box really well.

“We were more fluent in the second half, but we know we could have been better on the ball again.

“We made better decisions in key areas and spent more time in their half, getting the ball down and playing into safer spaces.

“Stevie Bausor made a few saves, but unfortunately we didn’t take our chances and conceded right at the death.

“I think we probably did enough to earn a point, but it’s a massive step forward for us because it’s been difficult for us when we’ve come here in recent seasons.

“We’ve closed that gap, I feel that we’re competitive and I think we’ll do alright in the league.”

The youth team host Gillingham in their first home fixture of the season next week.
