YOUTH TEAM WIN AT FOREST GREEN ROVERS

A report on Saturday's EFL Youth Alliance Cup action

19 August 2023

Northampton Town Under 18s progressed to the EFL Youth Alliance Cup southern section second round with a 3-0 win away to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday morning.

Neo Dobson scored a brace, whilst Harry Guess netted the young Cobblers’ other goal as they made it two wins in three games at the start of the season.

Coach Shane Goddard made one change to the side that secured their first victory of the new campaign against Gillingham last week, as Guess replaced Will Ronald in the starting line up.

The visitors made a positive start and earned a number of corners and free-kicks in the opening stages. Their best chance in this period came 10 minutes in when Dobson almost reached James Owen’s cross to head home at the far post.

The Cobblers deservedly opened the scoring less than two minutes later, Guess tapping in from close range after Jamari Hart’s driven cross was spilled by ‘keeper Daniel Blackburn.

Dobson doubled his side’s lead midway through the first half, slotting into the far corner having been played through on goal by Reuben Wyatt.

The visitors continued to create opportunities before the half-an-hour mark. Josh Rayfield’s powerful first-time strike deflected into the path of Dobson and his stab towards goal was cleared off the line before Matty Ireland outstrengthened his marker to reach Stevie Bausor’s drop kick and fire a low shot across goal.

Forest Green began to control possession for the first time late in the opening 45 minutes, but Bausor and the Cobblers’ two-goal advantage remained untroubled heading into the break.

The visitors regained their grip on the contest early in the second half, Hart smashing a low shot into the side-netting and having an effort from the edge of the area tipped over by Blackburn.

The two half-chances fell either side of the Cobblers’ third goal, which came from Rayfield’s quickly-taken throw-in. Dobson controlled the ball on the byline, dribbled into the box and placed into the bottom corner.

The third turned out to be enough to send the youth team through to the next round. They return to EFL Youth Alliance South East action away to Luton Town next week. The Hatters finished top of both the regular season and Merit League One tables last season.
