NORTHAMPTON TOWN WOMEN RECORD ANOTHER PRE-SEASON WIN

A report on Thursday's action

4 August 2023

Northampton Town Women won 2-1 away to Abingdon United in a friendly on Thursday night.

Jade Bell scored both of the Cobblers’ goals, her seventh and eighth of pre-season as they defeated the 2022-23 Southern Region Women’s Football League Premier champions to earn their fifth victory in as many matches.

The visitors were effective in possession in the opening stages and created two early half-chances as Bell had a dangerous ball across goal cleared and Kim Farrow had a snapshot held by the diving ’keeper.

They opened the scoring on the quarter-of-an-hour mark when Farrow won a 50-50 and played the ball across the box to Bell, who placed a composed finish into the far bottom corner.

The Cobblers’ rhythm was disrupted due to an accidental collision which forced ‘keeper Katie McLean and captain Zoe Boote off through injury 10 minutes before the break. Both players are thankfully okay. Abingdon United capitalised after a lengthy delay and equalised almost instantly.

The contest became scrappy after the incident, but the visitors regained their composure to begin the second half in the ascendency.

They made the most of their momentum early on, restoring their lead when Laila Channell overlapped on the right wing and whipped in a delightful cross that was powered home by Bell.

The Cobblers continued to threaten with Ona Ndefo driving forward and aiming for the bottom corner only to be denied by a fingertip save and Bianca Luttman rattling the crossbar with a 40-yard free-kick.

The visitors had to stay alert to secure their fifth pre-season friendly win, the onrushing Holly Mayfield reaching the ball before an attacker and Vicky Barrett clearing the follow-up effort off the line.

Oldfield and Williams’ side host FA Women’s National League Division One South East side Chesham United on Sunday. The fixture is the first team’s final game at Harpole FC.
