Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard was delighted with his side’s 2-1 win over Cheltenham Town in the EFL Youth Alliance Merit League Two on Saturday.
Tom Cartwright and Neo Dobson scored the young Cobblers’ goals as they maintained their unbeaten record in the second stage of the season, inflicting a first defeat on their opponents in the process.
“It’s good to keep winning because each win increases the boys’ hunger to keep driving themselves to get more,” Goddard said.
“I was really happy with how we controlled possession and some of our patterns of play in the first 20 minutes.
“We didn’t create too many clear openings, and we’ll look at how we can create more in future.
“We took our foot off the gas a little bit in the middle spell of the game, and Cheltenham got a foothold.
“Credit to them because they make it quite difficult for you to build and create anything clear-cut.
“We had to be patient, and the boys took their two opportunities when they arose.
“The move for the goal that won the game is excellent, and the boys showed a resilient mentality to not be affected by conceding and to score straight from kick-off.
“I’m really pleased with the three points and that there were some good aspects of our performance.
“The Under 16s that came into the group in January are utilising the Merit League really well, learning about each other moving into next year.
“Our focus in the final two games is on putting in positive performances.”
The youth team travel to Southend United for the penultimate fixture of their Merit League campaign in a fortnight.
