Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard described his side’s 3-0 win away to Forest Green Rovers in the EFL Youth Alliance Merit League Two on Saturday as ‘the perfect away performance’.
Kai O’Keeffe, Jamari Hart and Reuben Wyatt scored the young Cobblers’ goals as they extended their unbeaten start to the second stage of the season to six games.
“We were really strong for the first 20 minutes, and we controlled the game with and without the ball,” Goddard said.
“We looked really effective and created positive openings, but we didn’t test the ‘keeper enough in that spell.
“We took our foot off the gas after that and allowed them to get a foot-hold in the game.
“We went one-nil up in a spell when they were probably the better side, and it was fairly even going into half-time.
“We lost a player to a red card just before the break and had to play with 10 men for the rest of the game, which was a massive learning opportunity for the boys.
“They showed great character and executed the tactical details and game-plan perfectly.
“There was some really good play and professionalism, and I’m proud of their efforts and the way they work for each other.
“It was the perfect away performance from us.”
