NORTHAMPTON TOWN WOMEN BEATEN NARROWLY IN FINAL HOME GAME OF THE SEASON

A report on Sunday's action

23 April 2023

Northampton Town Women lost 1-0 to Solihull Moors in the final home fixture of their inaugural FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands season on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts controlled the early possession and created the first chance when Jade Bell ran onto Abbie Brewin’s through ball and was denied by the onrushing Freya Upson from a tight angle.

A cagey period of few opportunities followed, until Solihull opened the scoring midway through the first half when Becky Knight tapped in Charlotte Taylor’s low ball across goal.

The visitors almost doubled their lead a few minutes later when a volley from a corner deflected off Knight’s head and travelled towards the bottom left, but Sara Wait made a goal-saving block and Holly Mayfield held the ball on the line.

Solihull captain Zoe Creaney came close to scoring a bizarre own goal when she attempted to find Upson on the half-an-hour mark, but her pass looped past the ‘keeper and hit the post.

Northampton attacked twice more before the break, skipper Zoe Boote diverting Alex Dicks’ cross towards goal only for Ellie Gibbs to clear off the line and Bell having a powerful strike beaten away by Upson.

The Cobblers threatened again on the hour mark, Upson conceding possession from a goal-kick but recovering to deny Dicks one-on-one. Mia Richards’ half-volleyed follow-up was headed off the line by Creaney.

Kim Farrow was denied by Upson at the near post moments later, having latched onto Fay Noble’s forward pass.

There was an added time goalmouth scramble as Favour Omenazu drove down the right and crossed to Keira Doig, whose header was inadvertently blocked by teammate Bell. Noble’s follow-up was also blocked.

Despite creating a number of chances in the second half, Josh Oldfield and Liam Williams’ side fell to a narrow defeat.

They end the season away to Doncaster Rovers Belles next week.

Cobblers: Holly Mayfield, Rachael Mumford (sub Favour Omenazu 82), Sara Wait (sub Bianca Luttman 46), Vicky Barrett, Zoe Boote, Abbie Brewin (sub Mia Richards 46), Fay Noble, Beth Artemiou, Abbie Reboul (sub Kim Farrow 46), Alex Dicks (sub Keira Doig 69), Jade Bell
