Northampton Town lost 1-0 at home to Sheffield FC in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands on Sunday afternoon.
The hosts were dominant in the first half and almost opened the scoring inside three minutes when Alex Dicks ran through on goal and hit the post.
But it was Sheffield who would take the lead against the run of play when Moriah McIntosh dispossessed Cobblers goalkeeper Holly Mayfield and passed into the empty net.
Northampton continued to control proceedings after the visitors’ opener and created a great chance midway through the first half, captain Zoe Boote firing over from Favour Omenazu’s lay-off.
Kim Farrow was denied by the woodwork twice either side of the half-an-hour mark, cutting inside and hitting the top of the crossbar with a curled shot before crashing an effort off the underside of the bar which bounced on the line.
The best opportunity came five minutes before the break, Dicks turning Farrow’s low ball across goal over from six yards.
After a slow start to the second half, the hosts came inches away from equalising for a second time after the hour. This time it was substitute Vicky Barrett’s header from Boote’s corner that hit the underside of the bar and just about stayed out.
Farrow was played through on goal as the Cobblers kept pushing forward 10 minutes later, but her shot was straight at the ’keeper.
And a Farrow flick-on led to a huge opportunity in the final five minutes, but her strike-partner Dicks’ half-volley was denied by the onrushing Sheffield stopper.
Despite all their pressure, Josh Oldfield’s side were unable to find an equaliser on a frustrating afternoon.
They take on Wolves in a re-arranged League Cup tie next week.
