FEMALE FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME SQUAD BEAT NORWICH CITY AFTER ALEX DICKS HAT-TRICK

A report on Wednesday's action as the Cobblers continue unbeaten start to NFYL South Premier Women season

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme Women’s squad won 5-3 at home to Norwich City on Wednesday afternoon.

Alex Dicks scored a hat-trick whilst Mia Richards and Ruby Heselden scored the Cobblers’ other goals as they came from two down to continue their 100% start to the NFYL South Premier Women season.

A scrappy start led to a scrappy Norwich opener on the quarter-of-an-hour mark as Iona Smith made a close-range save but the ball was turned in at the second time of asking.

Northampton were almost back on level terms a few minutes later, but Keeley Jackson’s follow-up was blocked on the line after Dicks’ shot was pushed away by the goalkeeper.

The visitors doubled their lead with 10 minutes left of the first half. It was another scrappy goal as the Cobblers failed to clear a corner and the ball was fired into the roof of the net.

Dicks halved the deficit less than a minute later, placing a low shot into the bottom corner after being played through on goal.

Phoebe Preston side-footed wide at the back post soon after as the hosts looked to go into the break on level terms.

And they did just that thanks to Richards, who looped an effort over the ‘keeper and into the back of the net from long range in the final minute of the first half.

The remarkable turnaround was completed early in the second period when Keira Doig was played in one-on-one and unselfishly squared to Dicks, who passed into the empty net.

Heselden doubled the Cobblers’ advantage before the hour, finding the bottom corner to round-off a quick passing move.

Norwich pulled a goal back out of nothing a few minutes later when substitute Remi Martin was dispossessed and the forward beat Smith one-on-one.

But Northampton’s two-goal lead was restored soon after, Dicks driving towards goal and finishing to complete her treble.

The Cobblers created multiple half-chances in search of a sixth goal in the time that remained, but the Norwich ’keeper made a number of decent saves to deny the efforts.

The damage had been done though, and the hosts came away with an impressive comeback victory.

Elsewhere, the Elite team lost 5-0 away to Crystal Palace in the South Premier Division, whilst the Development team travelled to Watford in the League Cup.
