SHANE GODDARD DISAPPOINTED WITH WEEKEND DEFEAT FOR YOUTH TEAM

Reaction to the weekend's EFL Youth Alliance action

Northampton Town Under 18s coach Shane Goddard wants more desire from his side after they lost 3-0 at home to AFC Wimbledon in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday morning.

The young Cobblers never really got going in a tight first half and a flat second.

“It was frustrating because we looked sharp in the warm-up but didn’t reach the standards we’re capable of in the game,” Goddard said.

“We conceded three sloppy goals through poor decision-making.

“We had three good openings but there wasn’t enough desire to score, and they were clinical with their chances.

“That sums it up, I think there wasn’t enough desire to compete all across the pitch.”

The youth team travel to Peterborough United in the FA Youth Cup first round on Tuesday evening.

Goddard is looking for his team to respond in the tie.

“There might have been half-an-eye on Tuesday with players protecting themselves, and we need a reaction in that game,” he added.

“We were competitive against Luton Town, but we weren’t where we needed to be for large spells today.

“We’ll be looking for the boys to drive each other on.”
