YOUTH TEAM BEATEN AT AFC WIMBLEDON

EFL Youth Alliance action

29 October 2022

Northampton Town Under 18s lost 3-0 at home to AFC Wimbledon in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday morning.

The young Cobblers were first to threaten early on when Rico Duggan’s curled free-kick was held by the goalkeeper.

The hosts came close around the quarter-of-an-hour mark, Marcus Bald making strong saves from Aron Sasu and Morgan Williams either side of Jola Lahan’s off-target close-range header.

And they were gifted a great chance after half-an-hour when Bald dived on Brad Smith-Howes’ back-pass and the referee gave an indirect free-kick from inside the area. All 11 Cobblers players on the line were unable to prevent Williams from smashing home.

They were inches away from an equaliser five minutes before the break when Dylan Hill moved the ball out of his feet and hit the top of the crossbar with a curled shot from the edge of the box.

Hill was in behind early in the second half, but Lahan handled the ball to deny the opportunity and was shown a yellow card.

Had the ball ran through to the Cobblers captain, he may have found a leveller. But Williams doubled his tally and AFC Wimbledon’s lead before the hour with a first-time strike having initially won the ball on the halfway line.

The visitors were unable to find a response in a flat final 35 minutes, their best chance coming when nobody was able to get on the end of an excellent ball across goal from Hill.

AFC Wimbledon secured all three points in added time, a slip from substitute Reece Irwin allowing an attacker to run in behind and place into the back of the net.

The youth team travel to Peterborough United in the FA Youth Cup first round on Tuesday evening.

The winners of the tie will travel to Charlton Athletic in the second round, the side that knocked Northampton out of the competition in the third round last season.
