JOSH OLDFIELD PROUD OF NORTHAMPTON TOWN WOMEN'S FA CUP PERFORMANCE

Reaction to Sunday's action

27 November 2022

Northampton Town Women joint-manager Josh Oldfield was proud of his side as they were knocked out of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup in the second round by FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Cobblers put in a positive performance but were ultimately defeated by strong opposition, who lost in the FAWNL Championship play-off final last season.

Oldfield praised his side, saying: “We knew what the challenge was when the draw was made, having faced Wolves twice already this season.

“It was easily the most difficult task we could have been given, and the girls did us proud.

“It’s not the result we wanted, but the application, desire and work-rate from everybody was exactly what we did want.

“We ticked all the boxes performance-wise, so we’re happy.

“You need three things alongside a good performance in a cup tie: a little bit of luck, a little bit of help from the officials, and your opponents need to drop their levels.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get any of those things today.”

Oldfield and Liam Williams’ side host FAWNL Division One North outfit Hull City in the Plate second round next week, their sixth consecutive cup tie.

The former is looking for a good result, having seen his team’s three-match winning run come to an end.

“We’ll get back to the training ground, work hard, and see where that takes us next week,” he added.

“We’ll be trying to impact the game in a positive way.”
