Northampton Town faced a tough Emirates FA Cup first round tie away to Chesterfield, who currently sit third in the National League.

Ben Fox returned from suspension and the midfielder came straight back into the side as one of three changes made by boss Jon Brady. Jack Sowerby and Ryan Haynes were also included in the starting XI but Brady was still without Danny Hylton (suspended) while Louis Appere missed out through injury as Tyler Magloire, Josh Eppiah and Ali Koiki remained sidelined. Reuben Wyatt, fresh from scoring a hat-trick in the under 18s FA Youth Cup first round win at Peterborough in midweek, was named amongst the Cobblers substitutes.

Ross Fitzsimons saved an early Fox header but Chesterfield were posing a threat and it was the home side who took the lead on 14 minutes, Armando Dobra curling a shot into the top corner.

Fox couldn’t quite connect with a flashed ball across the box from Kieron Bowie as the Cobblers responded and they were denied by the woodwork when the on-loan Fulham striker raced through only to see his shot strike the inside of the post. Jon Guthrie meanwhile had a header cleared away but at the other end the Spireites continued to look dangerous on the counter attack in an open first 45 minutes.

Jamie Grimes made a terrific block to prevent Mitch Pinnock from equalising early in the second half but with his side still trailing in the first round tie Jon Brady made a change, Shaun McWilliams coming on for Marc Leonard.

Fitzsimons saved from Fox after a neat lay off from Bowie before the midfielder was replaced in a double change which saw the introduction of Harvey Lintott and Akin Odimayo.

Max Dyche came on up front for the final few minutes but despite their best efforts the Cobblers couldn’t force a replay, Bowie denied by the cross bar deep in stoppage time with Pinnock firing narrowly over on the re-bound as Chesterfield booked their place in round two.
