Northampton Town drew 2-2 at home to Forest Green Rovers in the EFL Youth Alliance Merit League Two on Saturday morning.

Ayo Lekuti (pictured) and Conor Thomas scored the young Cobblers’ goals as they increased their second stage points tally to 10 in five games.

Coach Shane Goddard made four changes to the team that beat Milton Keynes Dons last week, as James Dadge, Reece Irwin, Lekuti and Rico Duggan replaced Callum Cook, Brad Smith-Howes, Jamari Hart and Kenny Ndefo in the starting line up.

The first chance came 20 minutes in after a slow start, Miguel Ngwa driving forward from the halfway line and firing just wide from 25 yards.

Lekuti opened the scoring five minutes later, looping a wide free-kick into the far corner.

Rueben Wyatt almost doubled the lead shortly after when he hit the crossbar from long range.

The visitors came close to drawing level late in the first half, but Josh Tomlinson diverted Luca Alonzi’s goal-bound effort onto the post and the forward’s follow-up went just over.

They did get back on level terms 10 minutes after the break when a high ball beat half-time substitute Tom Ladyman in the Cobblers goal.

However, Thomas restored the hosts’ lead soon after, calmly finishing at the back post from Wyatt’s cross.

Captain Dylan Hill crossed for Ngwa, who flicked a header over from close range as the Cobblers looked to double their advantage midway through the second period.

But Forest Green equalised for a second time late on through substitute Jose Marquez after a quick free-kick was taken.

The youth team travel to Newport County next week.
