FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME BEATEN BY TOTTENHAM

A report on Wednesday's action

23 March 2022

The Northampton Town Football and Education Programme NFYL South Central Championship squad lost 3-0 at home to top-of-the-table Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday afternoon.

The defeat ends the Cobblers’ seven-game unbeaten run in the league.

Spurs took an early lead when a cutback was fired in at the back post.

Cobblers captain Callum Law came close to equalising after a quarter-of-an-hour, almost catching the goalkeeper out with a free-kick from just inside the opposition half.

Elliot Balchin-Love’s cross was cleared to Sonny Reeves, whose header was blocked on the line as the hosts continued to press for a leveller midway through the first half.

However, Spurs doubled their advantage before the break when an attacker was played through on goal and rolled the ball home.

It was three 10 minutes into the second period when a low cross was finished from close range.

Jonny Harris flicked a header wide from substitute Bradley Cheshire’s long throw as the hosts looked to get back into the game on the hour mark.

Cheshire had a chance of his own with 15 minutes to go, spinning in the area and dragging his shot wide with 15 minutes to go.

The Cobblers were unable to find a consolation goal and their unbeaten run came to an end.

Tom Ash’s side host Crystal Palace next week. The reverse fixture ended in a 2-2 draw.
