Jon Brady named an unchanged side for the trip to in-form Carlisle who included among their substitutes former Cobblers defender Rod McDonald and ex-Town loanee Brennan Dickenson.

The first chance of the afternoon fell to Louis Appere but having been played in by Paul Lewis he couldn’t keep his shot down. Carlisle also had an early sight at goal and it needed an athletic save from Liam Roberts to keep out a powerful close range shot from Kristian Dennis

Lewis had an effort blocked, Sam Hoskins saw a cross/shot go narrowly wide and Aaron McGowan fired over from the edge of the area after some good work by Shaun McWilliams as the Cobblers created a number of half chances.

With the first half nearly up Fraser Horsfall had a chance to break the deadlock but from 8-yards out he failed to test Mark Howard in the Carlisle goal.

McWilliams, who picked up a knock towards the end of the first half, was replaced by Danny Rose at half-time.

Cumbrians substitute Brennan Dickenson drew a good save from Roberts but it was another substitute who made the breakthrough, with just over fifteen minutes to play, Tobi Sho-Silva, having only just come on, firing into the corner.

The Cobblers weren’t behind for long however, Paul Lewis, who scored a hat-trick against the Cumbrians in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, heading home a pin-point cross from Beryly Lubala.

Carlisle were awarded a penalty in stoppage time after the ball struck Horsfall’s arm and Jordan Gibson stepped up to score from 12-yards to win the game.
