A report on the latest pre-season action for the Northampton Town youth team

16 July 2022

Northampton Town Under 18s lost 2-1 at home to Coventry City in their third pre-season fixture on Saturday morning.

Reuben Wyatt scored the young Cobblers’ goal as they were narrowly defeated in an even contest.

Shane Goddard’s side created the first chance of a physical opening period when the goalkeeper failed to deal with Brad Smith-Howes’ driven corner, but nobody in a claret shirt was able to turn home from close range.

The Sky Blues opened the scoring with a powerful header from a corner after a quarter-of-an-hour, but Wyatt fired across goal and into the bottom corner to equalise for the hosts two minutes later.

Northampton came close to turning the game on its head on the half-an-hour mark when Reece Irwin charged down the goalkeeper’s clearance and the ball bounced just wide.

The visitors began controlling play after the drinks break, a shot from the edge of the area deflecting over the crossbar and an effort from long range forcing James Dadge into a low diving save.

They restored their lead late in the first half when an attacker side-footed into the bottom right corner from the penalty spot after a teammate was tripped in the box.

The advantage was almost doubled before the hour, but Dadge back-pedalled to tip a looping corner away from goal.

Cobblers substitutes Fin Amidi and Rico Duggan almost made instant impacts 10 minutes later, but the former had two shots and the latter had one effort blocked in quick succession.

Kai O’Keeffe ran across the area and fired towards the near post as the hosts looked to get back on level terms for a second time late on, but the goalkeeper made a smart stop to secure a win for his side.

The youth team travel to Watford for their fourth pre-season friendly next week.
